Description:
This late 19th century Korean cabinet set exemplifies the refinement of traditional lacquer craftsmanship combined with luminous mother-of-pearl inlay. The set consists of a tall upright cabinet and two low rectangular cabinets, all designed with functional storage while serving as works of art.
Each surface is intricately decorated with figural scenes of daily life and scholarly pursuits, framed by geometric and floral motifs in shimmering abalone shell. The interplay of black lacquer and iridescent mother-of-pearl creates a dynamic visual depth, with panels that change character under shifting light.
The tall cabinet features an open upper section, two small drawers, and a lower compartment with double doors, while the low cabinets include multiple upper drawers above four hinged doors. All are fitted with protective glass tops that highlight and preserve the artistry beneath.
A rare example of late Joseon dynasty decorative furniture, this set embodies the harmony of utility and ornamentation, representing one of the most accomplished traditions of Korean lacquerware. It is an exceptional addition for collectors and connoisseurs of Asian decorative arts.
