Case Study: From the Serengeti to the Rockies – A Wildlife-Inspired Retreat by Miolism
At Miolism, we believe the best interior spaces tell a deeply personal story. For this featured project, nestled in the mountainous landscape of Aspen, Colorado, the narrative began thousands of miles away on a safari in Tanzania.
When our clients returned from their trip, they didn't just bring back photographs; they brought back hand-drawn sketches capturing the kinetic energy and raw beauty of African wildlife. Their challenge to us was clear: How do we seamlessly blend the soulful, wild inspiration of the Tanzanian savanna with the grand, light-filled architecture of a modern Rocky Mountain home?
Here is a look at how the Miolism team translated personal travel memories into a breathtaking, award-winning architectural reality.
The Inspiration: Translating Memory into Material

From sketchpad to structural art: The original pen-and-ink concepts inspired by a Tanzanian safari, translated into custom ironwork for this Aspen retreat.
The core of this project was honoring the client's connection to nature. The sketches they provided—featuring running predators, grazing elephants, and soaring birds—served as our foundational blueprint. Instead of relying on traditional taxidermy or standard wildlife prints, we decided to integrate these animals directly into the home’s structural DNA through bespoke metalwork and biophilic design.
The Miolism Approach: Key Design Features
We focused on layering natural elements, maximizing natural light, and using custom fabrication to turn 2D art into functional 3D architecture.
1. The Kinetic Silhouette Metalwork

Replacing a traditional balustrade, bespoke metal silhouettes of sprinting predators guide the eye upward, creating a dynamic sense of motion through the home’s grand library.
To capture the movement of the Tanzanian wildlife, we forged the client's sketches into striking, heavy-gauge ironwork that acts as the home's most defining feature.
- The Predator Staircase: Replacing a traditional balustrade, black metal silhouettes of sprinting cheetahs and wild dogs guide the eye up the modern floating staircase, creating a dynamic sense of motion.
- The Elephant Mezzanine: Overlooking the main living space, the interior arched balconies are secured by custom railings featuring grazing elephants, perfectly silhouetted against the bright, white walls.
- Avian Accents: Sun motifs and swooping swallows are integrated into the ironwork, softening the heavier animal figures and adding a sense of lightness.

A nod to the Serengeti: Custom-forged grazing elephants act as a striking, functional railing along the interior mezzanine, framed by smooth architectural arches.
2. A Conservatory That Bridges Two Worlds

Biophilic design meets mountain luxury: A soaring, double-height glass conservatory bridges the gap between the lush indoor environment and the snow-capped peaks beyond.
To harmonize the African inspiration with the actual Aspen setting, we designed a soaring, double-height glass conservatory.
- Biophilic Harmony: We introduced lush, oversized indoor palms and natural rattan furniture to echo the tropics, contrasting beautifully with the snow-capped mountain vistas visible through the curved glass grid.
- Abundant Light: A massive grid skylight crowns the central living space. This ensures the custom metal silhouettes cast ever-changing, dramatic shadows across the walls and floors throughout the day, mimicking the harsh, beautiful light of the savanna.

Flooded with natural light, the central living space uses structural transparency to keep the majestic landscape in full view.
3. Earthy Textures and Eclectic Curation

A masterclass in layering: Warm brick textures, raw wood pieces, and a massive grid skylight ground the eclectic, wildlife-inspired space.
A home inspired by a safari should feel grounded, collected, and timeless. We stepped away from cold, ultra-modern finishes to embrace warmth and texture.
- Natural Materials: Rich brick hearths, raw wood accent pieces, and earthy-toned textiles root the space in nature.
- Artistic Juxtaposition: We paired the rustic, wildlife-inspired elements with classical touches—such as a painted frieze over the fireplace, towering multi-story bookshelves, and a minimalist line drawing of swans. This creates an eclectic, highly curated aesthetic that feels both worldly and intimately comfortable.

Curated eclecticism: A classical painted frieze sits beneath a minimalist, modern line drawing of swans, proving that a safari-inspired home can still feel deeply elegant and timeless.
The Result
By combining the raw inspiration of a Tanzanian safari with the structural elegance needed for a luxury Aspen home, Miolism created a living gallery. The resulting space doesn't just display art; it embodies it, surrounding the clients with the memories of their travels every single day.
